Originally from El Paso in Texas, Dan Weiss is an emergency manager for the State of California and an active freelance bassoonist and contrabassoonist. He attended undergraduate studies at California Polytechnic State University, where he earned a degree in City & Regional Planning while also performing in numerous symphony and chamber ensemble groups. He has since also attained graduate degrees in Emergency Services, Disaster Management, and Fire Sciences.

Dan is a lifelong musician tinkering with many instruments as a young child, and picking up bassoon in sixth grade. Along with performing in many San Diego ensembles, he has been involved with Villa Musica for the past ten years, primarily with the Villa Musica Symphony, Wind Ensemble, and Chamber Players groups. He also performs locally with the Left Coast Quintet for which he is the founder and artistic director.
