Villa Musica’s multi-generational Mariachi ensemble and Summer Camp are programs that we consider foundational to our mission. Over the years we’ve welcomed musicians of all ages and backgrounds into the group, and students from 7-17 have participated in the camp. Our teaching artists strive to provide a space for the discovery of this rich artform, and enable us to build a lasting community. It is always so sad to have to say goodbye when one of those members leaves.
On September 3rd of this year Rosalío Chavarín, one of the core members of the Mariachi ensemble, passed away. Rosalío had a life long love for mariachi music that he shared with everyone around him, including his daughter Veri, and his grandaughter Lucía, who were members of the Villa Musica Mariachi Ensemble alongside him since 2021. When asked how best to remember him, Veri said “[He should be remembered as] someone who has a very strong work ethic and believed in the power of education and community, and who was very compassionate and cared about the well-being of everybody.” In October, Rosalio’s story will be highlighted by local humanitarian photographer and documentary maker STEVEN WADE ADAM’S beautiful short film YO SOY MARIACHERO, which has been selected as a finalist for the San Diego International Film Festival.
In honor of Rosalío’s legacy, we have named our Mariachi Summer Camp; Camp Rosalío. We hope that his story and his love for music sparks the same passion in other musicians in our community. To support the Ensemble or the Camp in memory of Rosalio please make your contribution HERE
