Steve Hoey Memorial Concert
Steve Hoey was a composer, Villa Musica Board Member, Flute Ensemble member, and community musician.
“In 2001, I met Steve Hoey. I was in my 2nd year of the doctoral program at UCSD and Steve had just arrived after completing his Master’s at CalArts. We became fast friends. Steve was not only a brilliant composer working toward his PhD., but had also earned degrees from Harvard and Oxford (a Marshall scholar no less) in business. We spent many years together at UCSD, and I even commissioned a work from Steve for my dissertation recital in 2006. “Sirens in December” was one of the most difficult pieces I ever learned (thanks Steve ?). During the pandemic, Steve and I fell in love with the recorder. I know, that rotten squeaky instrument we all learned in fourth grade. But our recorders weren’t squeaky (well, not to us) and every weekend we would get together in the park next to my house to play duets. It soon became our happy place. We started to diversify and soon our collections grew. Tenor / Soprano duets floated out over the trees and sometimes we felt like the pied piper with all the children and families we attracted each week. On February 16th, 2022, Steve lost a very brief but mighty struggle with Melanoma. He passed peacefully holding his brother Brad’s hand. Steve played with many ensembles around town, but the Villa Musica Flute Ensemble was one of the joys of his week. I know the members of the ensemble are devastated by his passing. Steve will be remembered for many things in his life. His brilliance, his business strategy sense, his sense of humor, his compositions, and, most recently, his passion for the recorder. But the most lingering memory for me is his kindness. I never heard an unkind word pass from his lips. He was a true gentleman. Rest in peace dear friend.”
